Senior Living: Working with Purpose, Passion & Privilege

At Markentum, we have a focus on the senior living industry and love being able to work with senior living communities throughout North America. Being able to help seniors and their loved ones find a place where they feel safe and cared for during their golden years makes every day at work worth it.

Life can take all sorts of twists and turns. If you go with the flow and follow your heart, you may end up right where you need to be❤️ I learned during my college internship how passionate I was for helping others, specifically the older population.

Before Markentum, I held a variety of positions that allowed me to help others. Having worked in cardiac rehab and giving someone a second chance at life after open heart surgery was a wonderful gift. I had the opportunity to listen to some of the best advice and kind comments every day.

Working in any area of the senior living industry brings a high level of job satisfaction. Seniors embrace you, appreciate you, and leave you to feel accomplished like your work genuinely matters.

triangleMany people are drawn in for a job but end up staying for the people.

As I continue to grow and follow my dreams, my career continues to steer me in the direction of senior living. From cardiac rehab, outpatient therapy and wellness, senior living, and now working for Markentum, a company that focuses on senior living, I make a difference in people’s lives and, for that, I can wake up smiling each day and know I will enjoy my work.

Why Senior Living Matters

By the year 2025, the senior living industry will need to recruit 1.2 million new employees. If these statistics are accurate, 20% of the population will be over the age of 65 which will equal about 60 million people.

If that doesn’t blow your mind, according to the latest Executive Member report from Argentum, “by 2050, the number of centenarians is expected to increase 18 times.” That is 3.2 million people over the age of 100!

Personally, I smile hearing this. Growing older is a gift that many do not get the chance to experience. Life can be taken too early for reasons across the spectrum. As a widow at 29-years-old, I choose to embrace life, enjoy it, and know that it is never too late to share a memory with a friend.

Why Join the Senior Living Industry?

My favorite reason to join the senior living industry is that “old people” can be pretty cool. They have stories they can tell you that you will never find in any history book. They love youthful spirits and thrive in settings where they have someone to motivate them, reminding them that they are never too old to have a little fun!

Here is one of my favorites YouTube videos highlighting seniors and what I took away from it:

  • Getting older shouldn’t stop anyone from having fun; Seniors can and will have fun!
  • Some seniors may struggle to learn technology, but they are willing to learn so they can stay connected with family and friends.
  • They still love to dance!
  • What is cuter than a couple in love popping each other on the butt at 85 years old?

I hope this video put a smile on your face and allowed you to take a step back and realize that, one day, you too might be an “old lady” or an “old man.”

The senior living industry is thriving!

It is an industry that I hope many more will join knowing that their job will bring purpose and passion to life! It is a privilege to work with this generation of folks. With any career, it has its ups and downs, but the difference you will make in someone’s life or their family’s life, as well as your own life, makes it so rewarding.
