Last week, in honor of ‘The Longest Day’, Markentum went purple to raise Alzheimer’s awareness. We had the opportunity to decorate our office entirely in purple and create a space that promoted Alzheimer’s awareness and brain health, as well as educate ourselves about what living with Alzheimer’s disease is really like.
The 21st day of June marks the summer solstice - the longest day of the year - on which the Alzheimer’s Association holds ‘The Longest Day’ event. For those living with Alzheimer’s, every day can feel like the longest day. Participants of this event are encouraged to make this a day of love, and that’s exactly what we did.
Together, we recognized the strength and perseverance of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and the tenacity of their caretakers.
In honor of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month, our offices had a competition to ‘Paint the Town Purple’ and invited the Volusia Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee to judge our spaces. This event allowed our team to learn more about the unfortunate realities of Alzheimer’s disease, as we themed our room you “Can’t Choose What You Lose.”
"Being intimately involved with a loved one that is dealing with Alzheimer's disease is a struggle. Like most things in life, there are ups and downs. The lowest of the downs is when your beloved grandmother looks at you like a stranger, cannot remember your face, let alone your name. There are highs when I walk in expecting very little, and she lights up and calls to me by name.
There is not much that can be done to comfort anyone dealing with cognitively impairing situations, but what we can do is bring light to the cause and spread awareness. With The Longest Day and creating awareness for Alzheimer's, we are creating an opportunity for funds to be raised, more research to be done, and to share our stories with others dealing with this similar situation.
Letting other families know they are not alone, is one of the most significant efforts we can make," said Valerie Stephen, Markentum's Content Creator.
Our display was made up of six different stations, each representing an activity to improve brain function, including a brain memory card game and a creative corner where the judges could explore their creative side by making pipe-cleaner flowers. Our experience ended with a balloon wall, each with a significant life milestone written on it such as “High School Graduation” or “Wedding Day”. We then asked the judges to “pop” a memory to highlight the sad reality that, despite our efforts to delay memory loss, you “Can't Choose What You Lose” when dealing with Alzheimer's.
Through this event, we were able to get a closer look at the struggles of those living with Alzheimer’s and the undertakings of those who care for adults with Alzheimer’s disease - many of our partners included.
